5 Canadian Bands To See At SXSW

There is a wealth of acts to choose from during SXSW, but here’s a little run down on the acts to check out from one of the SXSWisEASY guy’s home country – Canada.

1. First and foremost, Electro-punk party band Shout Out Out Out Out (Edmonton AB) put on a fantastic show and are going to be the band that will revive those weary shoes. The play March 20th at the Beauty Bar.

2. For a unique spin on hip hop check out quintessential story teller Buck 65 (Halifax NS). He’ll be dropping intriguing tales on March 21st at the Scoot Inn.

3. Then if you feel like a session of sultry dance, check out Thunderheist (Toronto ON).They play March 19th at the iheartcomix Showcase at the Beauty Bar

4. If you in the mood for something a bit lighter, Lorrie Matheson’s (Calgary AB) beautiful songwriting is a must. His showcase will be at Momo’s on Friday March 20th.

5. And If there aren’t enough emoticons to express your pent up rage, Toronto’s The Cancer Bats are in Austin to belt out some of their high energy screamcore. They play on at the Kerrang! Showcase on March 20th at Latitude 30.

Have fun and remember to stay hydrated while you party your socks off.

More Do’s & Don’ts

The SXSWisEasy team is right into the swing of SXSW. We’re meeting new people and just kick started our social media experiment this morning.

But as we go through things we thought we’d add a couple of more Do’s & Don’ts.

Do wash the stamps off your arm, before going to bed. Don’t fall a sleep on your arm before the stamps dry.
Do heed our advice with a grain of salt. Don’t ignore the advice about the Segways.
Do use a combination of twitter and specific landmarks to meet up with people. Don’t tell people you’ll be the one with the Thick Rimmed Glasses, the ironic T-shirt with the iPhone. You just describe 96.45% of SXSW Interactive Attendees.

What do you see at SXSW?

We want to see what you see at SXSW 09, so we came up with an idea. It involves you, but you don’t have to do much – sounds ideal doesn’t it?

Participate in the SXSWisEasy Photo Experiment

Participate in the SXSWisEasy Photo Experiment

We’re going to hand out a number of disposable cameras (we know, it’s old skool) to people like you. Your job will be to take a few photos anything or anyone, but ideally your shots will reflect your SXSW experiences. Then you’ll pass the camera on to a fellow SXSW attendee for them to do the same.

Here’s how it works:
1. Respond here if you want a camera;
2. Take a few images and pass off the camera to another SXSW attendee. Let us know here (or via Twitter @SXSWisEASY) who you gave the camera to. If possible, that person will either @reply to us on Twitter or here.
3. Last person follows instructions on the camera to return it.

Capture The Wildlife of Austin

Once the photos are developed we’ll put them online and you can claim the ones you took. Most camera drops almost always involve nudity and weirdness, and we hope for nothing less. It is Austin, after all.

So be part of the social experiment that is SXSW. Join our fun and we’ll see you in a couple days with your camera.

5 reasons to upgrade to a gold badge

Some come for the music. Others for the interactive elbow rubbing. But those in the know come for the FILM FEST.

With a relatively inexpensive upgrade you can go GOLD and gain access to some quality flicks. Sure, there are some big names (Sam Raimi)  and major studio screenings (I Love You, Man, Observe and Report) but there are some great indies that are worth the extra scratch. Here’s our top 5 films/reasons to make the upgrade or sneak away form that speech or skip that early party:

Awayadays

Awayadays

1.) Awaydays – After seeing great biopics about British bands and their labels (Control, 24 hour Party People) we’re ready to see the other side of the coin—how they influenced a whole generation struggling with the same issues they were writing about.

2.) Goodbye Solo – With the beautiful Smokey Mountains as a backdrop, this film about the friendship between a cab driver and a man who has nothing to live for –  just might be the feel-good-story of the fest.

3.) An Acting Workshop by Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) – Who wouldn’t want to take some pointers from the mind behind George Bluth?

4.) Too many great documentaries to name – With films like Pulling John, Last of the Beekeepers and The Way We Get By…there is not enough time to see or talk about them all. (Well maybe just one…)

5.) Best Worst Movie – A doc about the worst movie ever made. Troll 2 and the strange cult following it has. The Alamo Drafthouse is featured in the film and could be like Déjà vu all over again!

BONUS!
6.) Sneak into the Vivid Entertainment panel. AND DON’T Twitter from there.

We hope to see you around at some of these highlights. Be sure to follow us on Twitter to stay in touch of the latest SXSW news.
