Transportation

Put one foot in front of the other. Repeat.

Be prepared to walk almost everywhere. The venues are close to one another, as far as “big” cities go. But there are other modes of transport to keep in mind.

From the airport

Hop in a cab, you’ll find plenty right out front. There are shuttles and buses as well, but why wait?

Downtown is 12 miles, so expect a fare around $30 or under. Just look for the skyline and forget about the ride – it’s the most expensive one you’ll take all trip.

When you need it, call a taxi

A taxi trip back to the hotel is a well-earned splurge after hours on your feet. It’s also the best way home should you imbibe.

Yellow Cab is the most popular. But if you find a cool-old hippie you like, ask for a business card. Your new cabbie friend could help out all week.

Phone numbers:
Yellow – 512-452-9999
Lonestar Cab – 512-836-4900
Roy’s Cabs – 512-482-0000
Austin Cab – 512-478-2222

Hit The Streets In A Pedicab

Hell, you can even make your driver head up one of the many steep hills downtown. Stay outside and enjoy the nice weather. Just look around, pedicabs are all over downtown.

Burn calories, not gas. Ride a bike.

The closest shop to rent from is Bicycle Sport Shop. It’s just a quick walk over the river. Austin is easy to ride, and it’s home to the world’s best cyclist (Lance), so awareness is pretty good.

Capital Metro buses are cheap

If you need to trek across town, consider the bus. Fares are only 75¢ one way – quite the steal. The buses run all over, and you can find schedules at the Capital Metro website.

The ‘Dillo is even cheaper

You see them everywhere – trolleys stopping at all the right spots. People hop on and off for just 50¢, which is good for two hours.

Depending on the run, the ‘Dillos hit their spots every 5 to 15 minutes.

Look for these around Austin to get around.

Look for these around Austin to get around.

Blue ‘Dillo runs every five minutes through downtown, 6th Street, the Warehouse District and the State Capitol.

Red and Gold ‘Dillos travel through downtown, to Austin Community College and University of Texas.

Silver ‘Dillo runs east from the Deep Eddy Pool, past the West End shopping district, Treaty Oak, 6th Street and the French Legation.

Orange ‘Dillo hits the LBJ Library, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum (meh, so-so), the State Capitol (fun and quick), Congress Avenue and Town Lake.

Night time transport

During the Interactive portion (and therfore first half of the Film portion) night time transport is fairly straight forward. Cabs and pedicabs are pretty easy to come by. There are also some night (Owl) buses available.

When the Music portion starts, night time transport become more difficult. Not only are some downtown streets closed, but there are just so manyy people all trying to get home.  Taxis after midnight are very hard to come by, and after 2am are virtually impossible to find. Try the night buses mentioned above, or if at all possible, walk.
