Our Picks

Is there anything better than seeing some great films before everyone else? SXSW has some of the best buzzed about movies and numerous showtimes for each film.

For a full list of films being screened check out the SXSW Film site. Below is what we think will be the best of the fest.

Update!

Here are some new films on the radar to check out:

Iron Maiden: Flight 666
With their iconic “Eddie” mascot, the world heavy metal gods bought a 757, loaded it with all their gear and traveled the world on tour. This doc follows them on this 2008 journey.

Our take: Who doesn’t love a little Maiden in this RockBand generation? This band is bigger than you think. This film will prove it. I mean, they bought their own Air Force One for crying in a bag!
For the love of design.

For the love of design.

ourpickObjectified
To quote Tyler Durden “The things you own end up owning you.” This movie is not quite about that but more about how designers work and think. Design is a part of everyday life and this film is not just for creatives.

Our take: Much like Helvetica, this film explores the personalities of the minds behind the products.

ourpickAmerican Violet
Based on true events in 2000, a young woman fights off an unwarranted drug arrest that would forever change the Texas justice system, which is making false arrests to gain more federal money that is rewarded to counties who garner more convections.

Our take: This film looks quite riveting. And the cast seems to be willing to push their limits to deliver on such a good story.

Died Young, Stayed Pretty
If you’ve been to a concert in the past 10 years (and seeing that you’re at SXSW, there reason to believe that you have) you might of seen a sweet looking poster to let you know it was happening. This doc by first time director Eileen Yaghoobian take a look at the artists in this art form but also take a look at how design affects the way we see the products/events they push. Read the official SXSW interview with the director.

Our take: We love going to Flatstock every year at SXSW. Why not know the mind behind the ink.
